Lysistrata Jones: Theater Review

Getty ImagesMichelle Williams, left, and Tilda Swinton With the Screen Actors Guild Awards announced Wednesday and airing Jan. 29, this makes the SAGs the group and show with the longest nominations out in the press. And how does this shake up the red carpet picture? Well, for one thing, there are going to be a lot of Bridesmaids who need dresses! And Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy have now moved up to A-list status, so they will be getting some major dresses offered and made for them.our editor recommendsSAG Awards TV: 'Modern Family' Leads Nominations, 'Homeland' SnubbedSAG Awards: 'Suits' Star Patrick Adams Reacts to Shocking Nomination, Talks 'Friday Night Lights' ExperienceSAG Awards: Jon Cryer on His First Nomination: 'I Had No Reason Whatsoever to Expect I Would Be Included'SAG Awards Nominations: The Complete ListSAG Awards Nominations: The Nominees' ReactionsSAG Awards: The Nominees The ladies of The Help will also have their pick of the designer litter -- not that Emma Stone hasn't had first dibs on dresses from next season from Europe, but now Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer will be joining her in that "we'd LOVE to make you a dress or three" category. Though Davis, Spencer and Chastain are not your average actress size 2's, they won't be hurting for major designer offers. Chastain was recently seen wearing Viktor & Rolf spring 2012 and Louis Vuitton spring 2012 -- both looks that are very hard to procure. This could be the year of the Large Sexy Gown: Both Spencer and McCarthy are glamazons who love to dress up and plenty of designers will be on board to help them in their quests. COMPLETE LIST: 2012 SAG Awards TV and Film Nominees Glenn Close is an Armani loyalist, and Meryl Streep tends to wear very simple things, so not much curiousity there. Tilda Swinton and Michelle Williams will be the fashion gets for designers at the SAGs -- both nominated for best actress, and both with definitively chic and quasi surprising styles. Will Williams wear Chanel couture (which shows before the SAGs air in Paris in January)? She is one of the few whom the house would consider. Will Swinton have her Euro designer friends Haider Ackermann or Raf Simmons (now at Jil Sander, said to be jumping ship to Dior) or Viktor & Rolf make her an avant-garde gorgeous gown or tux -- or will she got with lower-key Prada, which she also wears? PHOTOS: SAG Awards Nominees And in the supporting category, we can be sure that Berenice Bejo from The Artist, nominated for best supporting actress, will get some fashion love -- though somehow we doubt she'll be wearing any of the 1920s looks from the spring collections of Gucci or Marc Jacobs. But it would be wild if she did! Somehow we expect she will go with what is chic and French, representing her country. When it comes to the SAG TV noms, Kate Winslet, Juliana Margulies, Tina Fey, Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara will all have many designer options -- with Winslet getting the most, of course. But Margulies always looks amazing at any awards show. STORY:'The Help' Leads Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations Kelly McDonald and Aleksa Palladino of Boardwalk Empire will also get good looks -- if they hire good stylists. That's key here. Because after the Critics Choice Awards and the Globes (both early and mid-January), it takes a savvy stylist to get designers to part with the really great dresses they might be holding back for the Oscars. And only Williams or Swinton could score couture for the SAGs -- maybe. We're sad Kirsten Dunst isn't going, but there are more nominations to be had. Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez to Ring in the New Year on MTV Special

Amy Winehouse posthumously achieved the biggest weekly sale of her U.K. chart career last week with Lioness: Hidden Treasures (Universal Island), as Official Charts Company data showed total album sales reaching a weekly high for 2011 of 4.8 million. Winehouse debuted on the album chart at No. 1 yesterday (Dec. 11) with 194,000 units. After two weeks in runner-up spot on the singles survey, Olly Murs moved to the top with "Dance With Me Tonight" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment).our editor recommendsAmy Winehouse's 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures' and 11 Albums That Got Big Posthumous Sales BoostsAmy Winehouse's Posthumous Album, 'Lioness: Hidden Treasures,' Debuts at Top of U.K. ChartsAmy Winehouse Foundation Makes First DonationAmy Winehouse Sales Record Eclipsed by Adele on U.K. Charts PHOTOS: Amy Winehouse Career in Pictures Winehouse's set made its winning start as the top four titles on the album chart all recorded six-figure sales, according to the OCC. As the Lioness track "Our Day Will Come" entered the singles chart at No. 29, the album hit the top to keep Michael Bublé's former No. 1 Christmas (Reprise/Warner Music) in second spot with 189,000 sales. Former X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson's Heaven (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) opened at No. 3 on 128,000 units. Her single "Nothing's Real But Love" reached No. 10 two weeks ago. An Ambiguous "Error" Hits The X Factor

We're down to the final five, and tonight the contestants will be singing two songs each, and the first has to be a dance number. Host Steve Jones foreshadows a twist later in the episode. The Jackson kids were here last week, which means that it has to be Madonna's daughter Lourdes this week, right? Get excited! To start off the evening, Melanie takes on a dance remix of Adele's "Someone Like You," which makes me wonder... is this the first time we're hearing her do Adele? Because it kind of seems like a no-brainer artist for her. Melanie's voice is flawless per usual, but the back-up dancers robots and pyrotechnics proved to be a bit distracting. "You looked and sounded like the rock star diva that you are tonight," says Nicole. Next up, Marcus Canty does Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody (Love Me Better)," and for the second time this evening, the judges are spot-on with the song choice. While we all know he doesn't have the strongest voice in the competition, Marcus is really coming into his own when it comes to performance-quality. He's arguably the most exciting one to watch on stage in the competition. "I have to say that was a very, very good performance. You came back strong," says Simon. Rachel Crowe sings B.O.B.'s "Nothin' on You," and while I think Simon had the right idea with choosing something youthful, it wasn't the best we've seen from her. Paula says, "You are just beautifully fearless. Your vocal depth transcends all generations. You nailed it, and I'm so proud of you." Next we have Josh Krajcik. It will be interesting to see how he handles this genre, since there's no question he's couldn't be further from a dance music performer. In an unusual and unexpected move, he sings Rihanna! And (in my opinion) it's awesome! I didn't think Nicole had it in her. The song, "We Found Love," is not only current and relevant, but it gave Josh an opportunity to showcase his voice in a different way than we've ever seen. Apparently, I watched a different performance than the judges. "I could never really see you doing this song. So I didn't buy it," says LA. You were great as a singer, but I didn't buy that song." Simon agrees, and slams Nicole's song choice. Rounding out the top five, Chris Rene takes on another Rihanna hit (this one, her collaboration with T.I. "Live Your Life") but it was shaky and unimpressive. He does the half-singing/half-rapping thing he always does, while gliding across the stage in what appeared to be a mini-treadmill. The only word I can think of to describe the performance is "un-special." But the judges didn't seem to mind it. They're playing nice today for the most part. "I'm not gonna say you're the best singer because you're not," says Simon. "But as an overall potential recording artist... I think you are doing brilliant." We're at the halfway point when Steve reveals the twist! "There was an error in communication with the song selections here on the show, so we've had to move the Pepsi Challenge songs to next week." (The singers were supposed to be performing songs selected by the viewers tonight). The audience lets out a unanimous gasp. Then they boo. The horror! Instead, the contestants will sing a song that they've chosen - but they've only had one night to prepare because everyone just found out last night. Which is to say that someone in production realllllly screwed up, and now they've been fired. Steve warns that since they haven't had much time to prepare, the pressure right now is incredible. (And by that he means, "They're going to be tragic, so bear with us.") After that fantastic build-up, I can't wait for the next five performances! What about you? We're starting out with Melanie again, and luckily she chose a song ("When You Believe") that suits her quite well. She really can do no wrong when it comes to a Mariah Carey/Whitney Houston number. Melanie looks stunning, the background shenanigans are minimal, and overall it was a top-notch performance for her. "You really thought of that last night and it was that good?" says LA. "That was unbelievable." Marcus sings "A Song for You," which is definitely a departure for him. It's a soulful performance - not at all what we would expect from the guy who has become notorious for gyrating back-up dancers and doing flips on stage. It wasn't the best vocally, but it was far better than I thought he was capable of. "Thank you for reminding us all why we fell in love with you from the start," says Nicole. "You remind me of a young Al Green. That was beautiful." Rachel's choice, "Music and Me," by Michael Jackson, couldn't have been more off-target for her. It felt old, boring, and quite frankly, it put me to sleep. There's really not much else to say about it. "I love that you picked that song for yourself," says LA. "Your vision for you is so inspiring." Which basically means he didn't have the heart to tell her how terrible it was. Josh Krajcik, on the other hand, does an awesome rendition of "Something" by The Beatles. Clearly as an older contestant, he has a better understanding of himself as an artist. It still wasn't my favorite performance of his, but it was an undeniably good song choice. "Compared to the first song I think this was a massive improvement," Simon tells him. "I think when you watch it back you looked actually insane halfway through it. Like your eyes were rolling." Co-sign. The last performer of the evening is Chris Rene, who has opted to sing an original song tonight. Can you say RISKY? It's probably just the guitar, but does he look hot tonight or what? Much to my surprise, I really like the performance. No, actually - I love it. The song has a catchy Jason Mraz-like quality to it, and it reminds us that there's more to him than the half-rapper/half-singer dude. "The world works in mysterious ways, Chris. Had that glitch not happened, you wouldn't have been singing this song," says Paula. "This is what I've been waiting for. God bless you." Simon calls the song a stroke of genius. This performance might have just single-handedly saved him from elimination tomorrow. What a confusing night this was! What did you think? Was Chris's original song the standout of the evening? Who is going home tomorrow? Weigh in below! show less

Comedians of the Funny or Die generation, Heidecker and Wareheim will also appear in the U.S. narrative competition entry The Comedy from Rick Alverson. "They bring their sensibility to this social critique of what our culture is all about right now," director of programming Trevor Groth says of The Comedy. "Between those two films, I think they're going to create quite a stir at Sundance. Which I'm all for." The 28th annual Sundance festival runs January 19-29 with screenings and events in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The full 2012 program features 110 feature-length films from 31 countries, including 88 world premieres. The New Frontier section, which was moved to the Miners Hospital last year, will now play out in a newly built venue, a big warehouse on Kearns Blvd. between the Yarrow Hotel and the Park City Marriott. Festival director John Cooper says that the new loft-like location, which was constructed in consultation with Sundance, is better suited to some of the multimedia performances and installations, panels and screenings that make up the more experimental category. The venue also has gallery and lounge space. Included in the New Frontier program are Denis Côté's Bestiaire, which explores the relationship between nature and humanity; Rodney Ascher's Room 237, which looks at the meaning of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining; and Eve Sussman | Rufus Corporation's whiteonwhite:algorithmicnoir, which involves a live algorithmic performance of music, dialogue, sound and footage shot in Kazakhstan. Despite the fringe elements of some of these out-of-competition films, they often find audiences outside the festival. Solutions to Nothing

A Kerbside Points of interest discharge of a chilly Iron Pictures presentation an Ambush Entertainment production. Created by Amanda Marshall, Sim Sarna. Executive producer, Matthew Leutwyler. Directed, edited by Matthew Leutwyler. Script, Leutwyler, Gillian Vigman. With: Julie Benz, Dane Prepare, Greg Germann, Zack Gilford, Kali Hawk, Elizabeth Mitchell, Erik Palladino, Barbara Hershey, Miranda Bailey, Vincent Ventresca, Mark Kelly, Tony Denison, Aja Volkman.Following a run of genre films and disappointing lit adaptation "The River Why," author-director Matthew Leutwyler applies to some thing personal with "Solutions to Nothing." Stitching together a quilt of tales including disparate Angelenos within the mode of "Magnolia" and "Short Cuts" and myriad other crisscrossers, this somber drama is well crafted and watchable but lacks the distinctive story content, style and standout performances being greater than a serviceable reboot of familiar ideas. With comedian Dane Prepare toplining and moderate critical support likely, prospects are mild for 12 ,. 2 launch in 12 U.S. metropolitan areas. Home-format potential looks more upbeat. The different strands circle round the highly promoted visit a lately disappeared 10-year-old suburban girl. Mother and father asked a suspicious neighbor (Greg Germann), though audiences will also be brought to question in regards to a creepy schoolteacher (Mark Kelly) who obsesses within the situation whenever he isn't playing fantasy games online. Likewise living alone within the teacher's apartment building is really a cop-in-training (Erik Palladino) coping with their own hidden issues. Prepare plays a counselor who's getting an affair having a wild-child music performer (Aja Volkman, from band Nico Vega) while glumly pulling out from his wife (Elizabeth Mitchell), who frantically wants a young child. He's further soured through the inadequacy of his mother (Barbara Hershey), who still demands his father will return following a decade's abandonment. Meanwhile, among his clients, a TV author (Kali Hawk), embarks on the tentative romance having a seem specialist (Zach Gilford) while fighting the internalized racism she's developed from constantly being the lone African-American in her own fortunate professional and social situations. In the opposite finish from the spectrum, a unemployed retrieved alcoholic (Miranda Bailey) fights for custody of the children of the brother (Vincent Ventresca) who's braindead from any sort of accident she was involved with. Hatched throughout a time of soul-searching the director experienced following a divorce, these figures in crisis maintain interest on the fairly lengthy but well-paced narrative haul. Low-key tenor is sacrificed for 2 climaxes that feel a tad conventional, one a violent conclusion towards the kidnapping mystery, another a triumph-of-human-spirit episode including a marathon. Cast encompassing a number of Leutwyler's regular collaborators is solid, though in reality no principal figures is especially absorbing, supportive or three-dimensional. Pic's episodic character, range of issues, and merely-modest impact will have best around the smallscreen, where its insufficient originality will not appear so conspicuous. Packaging is professional, although the worked up handheld lensing applied by d.p. David Robert Johnson feels inapt of these intimate dramatics.Camera (color, HD-to-35mm), David Robert Johnson music, Craig Richey music supervisor, Michael Becker production designer, Joe Lemmon set decorator, Jennifer Lemmon costume designer, Keri Cruz seem, Eugene Thompson re-recording mixer, Jeremy Grody assistant director, Nick Touhey casting, Michael Testa, Serta Shaner. Microsoft Eyes Entry Into Scripted Television

It looks like software giant Microsoft is looking to get into the scripted TV business. I hear that the company has hired a headhunter to search for an experienced executive to serve as a head of scripted. Microsoft has dabbled into original series before. Several years ago, the company’s music and entertainment service Zune partnered with MEAN Magazine to produceCinemash, a digital comedy series that took on classic scenes from popular movies. Microsoft recently has been exploring the scripted TV territory for its video-game console XBox. After a decade of growing pains, original content has finally become the new frontier for big Internet companies, though none has gone as far as to produce high-end series for online distribution, and Prospect Park’s failed attempt to do it with canceled soaps One Life To Live and All My Children proves just how economically challenging that is. Netflix is betting heavily on scripted series through straight acquisitions of drama House Of Cards and comedies Orange Is The New Black and Arrested Development. And Google’s YouTube recently announced the launch of as many as 100 channels with premium original content.

After Getting Close On Several Big Jobs, Director Bryan Barbers Taking His Next Meetings With Gigantor In His Corner

As fewer movies get made these days, the hardest thing for a director or a writer is just getting hired. Bryan Barber, who went from helming videos for bands like Outkast to making his feature debut with the stars of that group on the 2006 Prohibition Era musical Idlewild, grew so tired of getting close and losing out on big directing jobs that he hunted and secured a film-centric property to improve his odds. After the lengthy courtship of an 86-year old voiceover artist who controlled the rights, Barber will go to his next studio meeting flanked by Gigantor, the giant flying robot star of the 60s Japanese cartoon import with a catchy theme song and a family-friendly premise. Barber controls the movie, merchandise and videogame rights, and will shop a $60 million live action film he calls Transformers meets Goonies. And guess who’ll be attached as director? Considering that robots remain hotHasbro told shareholders this week that another Transformers is in the offing and a Real Steel sequel is also a possibilityBarber figures there should be interest in this story of a 12-year old boy who ends up with the controls to the giant weaponized world-saving robot. Barber hopes to take the same proactive route that allowed Tate Taylor to direct the summer sleeper hit The Help (he optioned the book before it had a publisher) and years ago got Frank Darabont his directing debut on The Shawshank Redemption (Darabont had written a superb script and controlled the book, and refused to step aside even when Rob Reiner and Tom Cruise were ready to re-team after A Few Good Men). For Barber, the Gigantor idea came out of the frustration of losing out on several big jobs that included Wolverine. While a stylish first effort, Idlewild didnt make a lot of money and seemed to suggest an art film career more than the tent poles Barber wants to direct. The development jobs he got after Idlewild died off when the business contracted. Shortly after my film came out, the writers strike killed those projects and when it was over, the number of films being made in Hollywood dropped dramatically, Barber told me. Suddenly there wasnt as much room for up and coming directors. Those jobs were drawing 15-year veterans. And every time I went for a job, I’d spend huge amounts of time and my own money making presentations for each job so studios could see my vision. On Wolverine, Barber spent three weeks and $50,000 for a presentation that included motion capture, stunts, concept art, storyboards and sound design. Fox was impressed enough that it reimbursed Barber, but he didn’t get the job. Barber makes a living through commercials, videos, and some TV, but he tired of waiting to be chosen. After all, it was five years ago that Idlewild came out. Said Barber: When you hit a roadblock in this business, you can give up, but I learned a lot and made relationships through those attempts. I decided, if I was willing to invest my money to gamble on a project I didnt own, why not spend that money on something I could control? He saw a video box for Gigantor and remembered watching the series after school when he was a kid in the Bay Area. Barber started by calling the video company and eventually tracked the rights to 86-year old Fred Ladd. A voiceover guy for cartoons, Ladd was given control of this orphaned Japanese language cartoon nobody wanted. Ladd recut the cartoons and supplied English language dialogue for American audiences. Barber got him to agree to lunch, and that began a long courtship. A detailed storyboard presentation sold Ladd, Barber said. Fred had been in talks with Fox back in 1996 to do an animated film, but they didnt agree, the regime changed and I think it just got forgotten even though anyone old enough remembers the theme song, Barber said. I got lucky. Theres a film here that doesn’t take itself too seriously, with heart and visual effects, about a super weapon that falls into the hands of a kid who develops the confidence to use the robot to save the world. Barber is now assembling a 6-minute sizzle reel–like Zack Snyder did for 300, Barber said–and he’ll soon be ready to go back to Fox and those other studios and try again. Barber is repped by WME. For those who don’t remember the Gigantor theme song, here it is:

Prospects For Brand New Cope With Simpsons Stars Searching Good

The reviews from the Simpsons‘ imminent dying were once more greatly exaggerated. It takes place throughout every cast renegotiation — the voice stars and also the creating studio twentieth century Fox TV undergo a really public standoff, triggering a slew of head lines concerning the certain finish from the beloved animated series, prior to the two sides ultimately achieve a contract. This appears to be again this time around as people near to the discussions are positive there could be new contacts using the the cast which will seal The Simpsons’ renewal by Fox for any 24th and perhaps 25th season. The deals aren't done and might close today as talks continue, however it appears like the stars would return having a pay cut within the 30% range they offered the studio but sans the lucrative back-finish participation these were seeking. Among the cast people, Harry Shearer, even suggested to consider a pay cut in excess of 70% in return for points on the program, however i hear that a choice of giving the stars any profit participation would be a non-starter for that studio. The cast’s position was greatly undercut Monday whenever a financial analyst revealed that Fox would obtain a $750 million windfall when the Simpsons will get canceled because the show’s demise will make it readily available for cable distribution. Regardless of the drumbeat, we reported at that time that the cope with the stars could near by sometime in a few days. For The Simpsons‘ producers saying yes to some salary cut to help keep the show going, yes, the studio got the producers aboard before it experienced the nitty gritty using the stars, but the majority of the writing executive producers they are under wealthy overall deals, so salary reduction is nearly a moot point.

As Butch Cassidy, Mike Shepard Rides Again

NY (AP) Mike Shepard is in town. For many years, he's migrated to NY from far-away country houses and existence on the highway. NY may be the "arena" for his work: often a play a book a movie."I have come and gone out of this town a lot, returning to '63," Shepard stated inside a recent interview over tea in SoHo. "It isn't the area I select to reside. It is the place I select to operate.InchShepard has become 67, his eyes tend to be more sunken and the hair grayer, but he remains piercing, charming and mysterious. The routine is remarkably exactly the same.He drives his truck from his Kentucky equine ranch (he always drives, never flies) and returns to NY, where he first showed up like a 19-year-old actor from his father's California farm. He came, he states, "from the desert" and shortly after that set the theater world aflame together with his visceral off-off-Broadway plays that hit happens like pulsing jazz riffs. The occasion for Shepard's latest visit may be the discharge of "Blackthorn," a movie that imagines Butch Cassidy (whom Shepard plays) had he resided on into senior years in Bolivia. The role is fitting of Shepard: a solitary estimate exile.Shepard, laughing hard, recalls an earlier critic remarking, "You do not look anything like Paul Newman!" A gritty and elegiac South American Western, "Blackthorn" bears little resemblance towards the classic 1969 "Butch Cassidy and also the Sundance Kid," which Shepard calls a "cartoon" in contrast.InchHe is a cowboy, you realize?Inch Mateo Gil, the The spanish language film writer of "Open Your VisionInch making his British-language feature pointing debut, states of Shepard. "He's very keen on horses and that he loves large landscapes and loneliness and everything. I figured that some issues i was coping with within the script were much like Sam's issues."Born with an Illinois military base, Shepard's father would be a violent, alcoholic The Second World War bomber pilot that has informed a lot of the playwright's work. In the one production his father Mike Rogers attended, he noisally cursed his son's representation of family existence.Shepard got music from his father (Rogers would be a Dixieland drummer, Shepard a drummer using the band Holy Modal Rounders, which together with on Bob Dylan's famous Moving Thunder Revue) in addition to struggles with alcoholism. Last Year, he was charged with driving while impaired.Shepard's "family plays" "Tooth from the Crime," ''Curse from the Depriving Class," the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Hidden Child" and "True West" constitute his most well-regarded as work.In the 1971 one-act "Cowboy Mouth," that they authored together with his then girlfriend, music performer and poet Patti Cruz, an autobiographical character states, "People desire a street angel. They need a saint however with a cowboy mouth.""I had been writing essentially for stars," Shepard states. "And stars immediately appeared to possess a handle onto it, around the rhythm from it, the seem from it, the figures. I began to know there is this chance of conversation between stars and that is the way it all began."He's sometimes known to individuals plays a few of which he's since rewritten for a number of reproductions as "clumsy." In early stages, Shepard declined to rewrite his plays, thinking about them "pure," a notion lucrative views "simply stupid.""I do not have anything against clumsy," he states. "Sometimes clumsy is alright. By clumsy I meant more that ... I'm not sure, I ought to have done them longer."Shepard lives together with his longtime partner Jessica Lange, with whom he's a couple of his three children. But he's continued to be close with Cruz which week recorded several tunes together with her old tunes by Washington Phillips, Ivory Joe Hunter, Slim Harpo and Richard Rabbit Brown."(Our friendship) transcended any youthful difficulties it transcended all of our different periods of existence," Cruz states. "We are likewise. When Mike and that i are together, it's like no particular time. People part the ones die, but to have the ability to have this type of wealthy history with a person like a friend is beautiful."Though Shepard frequently brings up the inscrutable American characteristics so deeply imbedded in the writing, he's remarkably generous during the period of a rambling interview. He's readily reflective and the humble conversation is interspersed with diversions on various passions, old and new: the tunes of Hank Williams Bob Dylan's storytelling in france they-Romanian playwright Eugene Ionesco Gary Cooper ("Just how can anybody nothing like Gary Cooper?") "Crime and Punishment" ("a genuine page-turner") and "Don Quixote," which he's rereading now. "Madness is his exile," he states."He very pads his privacy, but when he's speaking for you and allows you in, he offers everything," states Cruz. "You are able to spend time at his table. You are able to ride his equine. You are able to try looking in his notebook. It's only a matter of walking with the door."Shepard's latest play was last year's "Age range from the Moon." Though he releases less works nowadays, he still creates prodigiously. He flicks with the notebook by his side (he always first creates inside a notebook, later moving to typewriter), evidencing pages of countless working plays, tunes, short tales and "stuff type of like prose poems, I'm not sure things to refer to it as.InchHe is just finished "the bones" of the three-act play he needs to stage within annually. Shepard earlier swore off longer works, but states that one found him "and that i covered it."This past year, he released the storyline collection "Day Trip of Days," a piece in excess of one hundred clips of fiction, largely sent in the road. It's among his finest works, forever fractured but a natural assortment of regret and rumination. He opened up it having a quote in one of his finest literary heroes, Samuel Beckett: "This is the mistake I made ... to possess wanted a tale personally, whereas existence alone is sufficient.InchPerform the devils of his youth still drive his work?"There is nothing peaceful about this,Inch he states, laughing. "Yeah, I'd state that it did originate from a fractured sensibility. And it is still fractured due to the condition of things. I am very grateful which i found writing, however it does not allow it to be anymore peaceful."In Shepard's 1982 book "Motel Stories," he stated he felt like he didn't have a house a sense he states remains."I essentially live of my truck I am talking about around. Personally i think more in your own home during my truck than nearly anywhere, the industry sad factor to express but it is true," he states. He appreciates acting is partially to pay for the rent ("You are able to write 16 plays and never make just as much money while you did doing one movie"), but states he's grown progressively intrigued with acting "because I've much less fear about this.Inch He's behaved in additional than 40 films, but is better appreciated for his Oscar-nominated performance in "The Best Stuff.""Initially when i first began in film, I had been afraid from the camera," he states. "Now I haven't any anxiety about your camera whatsoever. None. I have become regarding this completely to the stage where I'm able to honestly say will be able to occupy that space that Brando personified when he stated, 'Just simply because they say "action" does not mean you need to do anything.'"Shepard has crisscrossed artistic representations, moving from plays to fiction to acting and music. However for him, the lines still converge within the theater."I usually felt like playwriting was the thread through everything,Inch he states. "Theater really whenever you consider it consists of everything. It may contain film. Film can't contain theater. Music. Dance. Painting. Acting. It is the whole deal. And it is probably the most ancient. It dates back towards the Druids. It had been way pre-Christ. It is the form which i feel quite in your own home in, due to that, due to being able to usurp everything."Copyright 2011 Connected Press. All privileges reserved. When Promotional Artwork Is Better Than a Movie: Justice Edition

Nicolas Cage in a glittery face mask. January Jones inexplicably playing bass guitar. Jones being held hostage at gunpoint. Cage getting handcuffed. Jones and Cage raging at Mardi Gras. Separately, all of these images could be part of an entertaining movie. Unfortunately, when strung together though, they give us the curious marketing for Roger Donaldson’s long-delayed thriller Justice. Formerly titled The Hungry Rabbit Jumps (your guess is as good as mine), the Tobey Maguire-produced picture features Cage as a husband who enlists a vigilante group to help him “settle the score” after his musician wife (Jones) is assaulted. Guy Pearce co-stars as a mysterious stranger who approaches Cage about revenge. As the revenge plan unfolds though, Cage undoubtedly learns that justice (the moral quality and not the most generic movie title ever) comes at a price. First, the lackluster trailer. Now, if you had only seen the following images, you might be interested in seeing what the movie entails, right? Justice will premiere in the UK on Nov. 18 but still has not locked a U.S. distributor or release. [via The Playlist]

Johnny Depp Looks Perfect In 'Dark Shadows' Official Photo

by John Mitchell Have you ever been so relieved that no matter what else is going on in your life, no matter how hectic your day, you pause and breathe and everything is just right? That is how I feel right now. Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly unveiled an official first look at the full cast of Tim Burton's hotly anticipated big screen take on the classic Gothic soap opera "Dark Shadows," and coming just weeks after paparazzi shots of star Johnny Depp looking ghastly and weird in heavy white makeup leaked online and sparked a massive (and generally negative) fan response, the image is a sight for sore eyes. I grew up watching reruns of the late-60s melodrama and have been excited about this film since I first heard it was being made. The dark aesthetic that made many of Burton's best films pop made him seem like a good fit to direct for "Shadows," and the cast, from Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins to Michelle Pfeiffer as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and Jackie Earle Haley as groundskeeper Willie Loomis, was perfection. Then that first photo of Depp leaked and our hopes were dashed. Depp's heavy makeup made it seem like Burton's "Shadows" would have more in common with his vividly colorful takes on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland" than his wonderfully dark "Batman" films and "Sleepy Hollow." And that was just wrong. As it turns out, I was the one who was wrong. I put my disappointment into words, shooting off a missive admonishing Burton for the direction I thought he was taking. Now, as this image clearly shows, Depp's look for the film is pretty much right in line with Jonathan Frid's styling from the original series. The makeup appears to have been overdone to counter the macabre filters Burton is shooting with and everything looks perfect. And when I say perfect, I mean it. Burton even took brunette bombshell Eva Green blonde to play Angelique Bouchard, the witch who turned Barnabas into a vamp. Then there's Pfeiffer's Elizabeth, who I worried, after seeing Depp's styling in the paparazzi photos, Burton would reinvent as some eccentric borderline crone. He didn't, and Pfeiffer looks troubled-but-regal as Elizabeth. Lest you think we are ignoring orange-haired Helena Bonham Carter in our praise of Burton's restraint, fear not because, she's the one who is supposed to be a little on the bizarre side. The character is, after all, a sometimes-out-there psychiatrist who in the series tries to cure Barnabas of his vampirism (and everybody knows that's one disease only a stake through the heart can cure). Even the interior of Collinwood Mansion looks right. It's as imposing, dark and gothic as I remember it being on the series. I am now, once again, so excited for "Dark Shadows" I can barely contain it. Now that I feel safe that Burton is moving in the right direction, with the right style and the right actors, I can go back to counting the days until May 11, 2012. There are 232, by the way. "Dark Shadows" fans, are you relieved by this first official look at the movie? Sound off in the comments section and on Twitter!

Will Martin Scorsese Join The E.G.O.T. Club?

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese picked up his first ever Emmy on Sunday, but dont expect him to join the E.G.O.T. club. No, Ill never get that, he told Access Hollywood backstage on Sunday, referring to the award quartet of an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony (the only one hes missing to complete the set is a Tony). Although hes won a host of accolades over the years, winning Sunday nights Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series award for his work on Boardwalk Empire still managed to move the director. Its really very exciting because its another medium, Martin said, referring to television. But the thing about working with the HBO group, I found that there was a great deal of artistic freedom and it got me to move faster. I havent shot so quickly [in years]. Martin already knows where hell put his latest honor, and expects it to land in one of his daughters movies almost immediately. This goes in my living room, [on] my second floor, he said. My daughter, shes gonna be 12 now, and her and her friends like to make these movies, these little movies, so this will probably be in the background. Speaking of movies, Martins first family film Hugo is on its way this Thanksgiving and hes looking forward to sharing it with audiences. Im supposed to be in the mixing room right now working on this film that is for the entire family, he said. Really, its OK Im not kidding. We show it to kids and they love it.
